STATEMENT OF THE CENTRAL COMMISSION OF
REFERENDUM OF THE REPUBLIC
OF SOUTH OSSETIA
On 19 January
1992 nation-wide voting (referendum) was held in the Republic
of South Ossetia
on the issues of independence of the Republic
of South Ossetia
and joining Russia.
The results of referendum firmly demonstrate the lawfulness of national and
political programs that are implemented by the government of the Republic of
South Ossetia on the basis of inalienable right of
the nation to self-identification, in accordance with the norms of law adopted
by the international community.
One of the
major political outcomes of the referendum is the entire failure of the
statement of opponents on political transformations in South
Ossetia.
The referendum has showed that 99% of electors from the voters’ list
support the independence of South Ossetia and its
joining Russia.
Equality and
independence may not be achieved by compelling measures, and the view of people
may not be irresponsible – as some media means state, thus supporting Georgian
neo-fascism, voluntarily or not.
Active
participation in voting of refuges from Georgia, the victims of anti-Ossetian massacres and persecutions, refutes the
information on negative attitude of Ossetians, living
in Georgia outside of the Republic of South Ossetia, towards the program on national
self-identification of southern Ossetians and joining
Russia.
Therefore, the
Referendum of the Republic of South Ossetia once again
strongly affirmed the lawfulness of democratic transformations implemented by
the Supreme Council and the government of the Republic of South Ossetia are based on the
strict observance of the norms of International Law.
Chairman of
the Central commission of the Referendum Y.
